Dear SD46 Learning Community,
It is with great joy and privilege that I introduce myself as your new superintendent of schools for the Sunshine Coast School District.
I have lived on the Sunshine Coast for the last 10 years with my husband and our two children. We moved here for the opportunity to raise our family in a community which was nestled in the spaces between the mountains, lakes and oceans and we are grateful to be here on the unceded territories of the Skwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw and the shíshálh Nation. What we found once we were here was not only the beauty of place, but also a community which exemplifies kindness, connection and care.
Our school district is a reflection and foundation of our wider Sunshine Coast community. We are a culture of care and I am so proud to be learning and working alongside the remarkable, dedicated and passionate trustees, staff, families and community partners that support and inspire each student to experience joy and fulfillment in realizing their potential as knowledgeable, confident and contributing citizens in the global community.
Our 2019-2023 Strategic Plan grounded in the vision, mission and affirmation guides our learning and provides the focus for our three circles of care: students, staff, and community. And within this work our journey continues in our commitment to reconciliation, equity and inclusion.
I am sure that many of you have questions about school start-up this year. Rest assured that the Ministry of Education and Public Health will be providing guidelines for schools in the near future. As soon as we receive this information we will inform you of what to expect for school start-up. Whatever September looks like we will continue to provide a safe, warm and caring environment for all students, staff and families. I know that together our learning community will continue to flourish and thrive despite the challenges we may face.
Thank you for your warm welcome when my appointment was announced. The outpouring of support was humbling and I know what an honour it is to hold this position of privilege in the pursuit of excellence for all learners, big and small.
I look forward to the opportunities to connect and deepen relationships with you all.
Warmly and with gratitude,
Kate Kerr
