Message from the Chair – June 2026

In June we focus on our value of celebration and there are many opportunities to practice and demonstrate our value of celebration this month. One of the celebrations that has become increasingly important during my time on the Board is Pride. And June is Pride month!

The final Board meeting of the school year signals a shift toward year-end celebrations and important rituals. It is also a time of transition and this year, that transition is especially significant, as June marks the completion of the final full school year that this Board of Education will undertake together. We are deeply grateful for the opportunity to serve our community and are proud of the work we have done to contribute to a stronger Sunshine Coast.

As the Board pauses for the summer, we have much to celebrate this year:

  • Recognizing residential school survivors through an honorary graduation ceremony and the awarding of diplomas.
  • A successful second year of our strategic plan, with a continued focus on student voice.
  • Ongoing support for DPAC/PAC professional development, including compassionate systems leadership and meeting skills.
  • Extensive policy and bylaw review work.
  • Continued advocacy for student safety, active travel, and transportation, including a successful BCSTA motion urging the Ministry of Transportation and Transit to recognize school zones as district areas with differentiated policy.

And over the past four years, we are also proud of:

  • Focused deeply on developing a thoughtful and innovative strategic plan – one that looks and feels different from others. It is inspiring to hear students, staff, and families speaking a shared language and seeing tangible value in our one aspirational goal and nine strands.
  • Demonstrated strong governance through responsible financial stewardship and facilities management – balancing budgets with care, aligning decisions with our strategic plan, and ensuring maintenance and spending priorities reflect our long-range facilities plan
  • Put students first – supporting meaningful student engagement in governance through DSLT, direct engagement with the Board, and advocacy at BCSTA and with the Province for formal recognition of student participation at the provincial governance level.

To the graduates of the Class of 2026 and our retiring employees, we wish you all the very best as you move into new and exciting chapters. We are incredibly proud of you. Remember, you are always welcome back – our relationship is not ending, it is simply evolving.

Happy summer, Sunshine Coast School District!
