Cross-Country Program Grows

SD46 Elementary Cross-Country Program Grows Thanks to Dedicated Coaches

School District 46 wrapped up another successful elementary cross-country season on Wednesday, October 12th. The district currently runs three events and hopes to expand further in the future. The first run is the season opener in Roberts Creek, next is the team event at Kinnikinnick Elementary and the season wraps up in Gibsons with the Gibsons Grind. Schools up and down the Coast have been training for these events since school came back in session in September. This year has seen record numbers come out to run. Six years ago, the District Sports Committee worked to resurrect the SD46 elementary school cross-country program after it had stopped over 25 years ago. In the past, every elementary school would host a running event. Since its rebirth, the program has been growing steadily and sees more and more schools coming on board. The team event had nine schools and over 100 runners and the final event saw 98 athletes running a vigorous route. Events like these only occur through the wonderful volunteerism of our community members. The Sunshine Coast has many gems, but the greatest gift might be the giving nature of the community. School sports offer accessibility and an inexpensive way for all kids to participate. School District 46 would like to thank all coaches, up and down the Coast, for volunteering their time for the betterment of all children.
