Changes to Reporting – Information for Parents and Caregivers
How is reporting changing?
- As you may have heard, BC has implemented a New Reporting Policy for K-12 students.
- One of the new changes is to the reporting timeline.
- You may notice that schools are reaching out to you very early to invite you to participate in family conferences. This is because family conferences are what we now call “Informal Learning Updates“.
- Informal learning updates provide students and their families and caregivers with brief informal information about how the student is doing in the class. These updates occur early in the learning process, so that students and parents/caregivers can have time to respond to the teacher’s feedback.
- Informal learning updates will look a little different at the elementary and secondary levels. There is a chart below showing the structure.
What does an informal learning update include?
- The informal learning updates do NOT include information about:
- Letter grades, percentages, or proficiency scale indicators
- However, they DO include informal information about students. Teachers may include information about:
- Student behaviour, engagement, participation, attitude, work habits
- Any concerns about the student (lack of attendance, etc.)
- Any celebrations a teacher would like to share about the student
- Informal learning updates are an important way to continue to build relationships and partner in learning.
- If you’re unable to attend a conference, feel free to reach out to the classroom teacher!
