Transforming Waste Management

December 12, 2023

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

We are excited to share a significant update in our journey towards environmental sustainability. After the Winter Break, our district will transition to centralized hallway compost / recycling/ garbage stations, and removing most classroom garbage cans. Portables and some specialty areas within schools will have smaller waste stations added. This move aligns with our commitment to sustainability and our responsibility to extend the life of our local landfill, which is expected to be full in a few years.

Currently, almost half (46%) of the waste being sent to landfill could either be recycled or composted. We recognize this change is a community effort and extends beyond the classroom. We encourage you to engage in conversations with your children about the importance of reducing waste by composting and recycling. Within our schools, we will be supporting this shift with learning activities and educational materials to support students through the change. Together, we can make a substantial impact on our environment and community.

We appreciate your support in this essential initiative. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s principal.

Sincerely,

School District 46 – Sunshine Coast
