Superintendent’s Weekly Update: 06/04

Superintendent’s Weekly Update June 4th, 2020

Dear Sunshine Coast families,

I would like to thank all of you for making the choice for your children about whether to attend school in June, or to keep your children at home. Whichever you chose, your personal decision was just right for you and your children. If you chose to send your children to school they are well supported at school and will enjoy connections with friends and school staff.  If you chose to keep your children at home for now, your teachers will continue their excellent support to them with remote learning in your home environment where you and your family feel comfortable. Flexibility and choice are important for our school families and we will do our best to support your children either at school or at home.

I am pleased to confirm that our schools are safe. We have very low infection rates in British Columbia as well as here on the coast. This low infection rate has enabled us to have the great news that we can open schools to our students. Our fabulous staff have established very clear health protocols that has provides for constructive and joyful learning in all of our schools.

We will not know what September will look like for education in British Columbia until much closer to that time. The Medical Health Officer will review the data and the science and will provide appropriate direction to us. The Ministry will inform us which of the five stages that we will implement in our schools at that time. Fortunately, we have done much of the work in planning for all of these possibilities as we have been in stage five (right after the spring break), stage four (up to last week) and stage three (June 2020).

Continuation of Learning:

  • Teachers will have less time to support students learning from home as they also teach at school. However, they  will continue the very successful approaches that they have created in the last two months.
  • This page has digital learning and support links that we have reviewed and are appropriate for our students. This will be regularly updated.
  • The Ministry of Education has many more resources available as well: https://www.openschool.bc.ca/keeplearning/

Communication:

  • If you have questions or comments about your child’s learning, please contact your child’s teacher. If the matter is more school related, please connect with your child’s principal. If the matter is more related to the direction of the district, please email me. If you don’t know who to talk to, contact any of us. We are here to help.
  • All contact information is available on this page.

Thank you once again for your partnership, patience and kindness to each other as we move through this rapidly changing story together.

Sincerely,

Patrick
