District Student Leadership Team (DSLT) Newsletter for Secondary Students
Hello students of SD46. This newsletter is presented by the District Student Leadership Team. We are a group of students within the district who work collaboratively to act as a bridge between you, the students, and district administration. We want to keep students informed on what is going on in the school district during these difficult times.
As students, we recognize and understand the concerns and stress that students are feeling around our education and COVID-19. We created this newsletter to ease some of your stress and answer some commonly asked questions. We hope that you are all practicing personal hygiene and social distancing, as it not only protects you, but others in the community (especially those with immunodeficiencies).
During this week, your teachers will be contacting you and your families, so please check your emails frequently! Learning opportunities are being put in place as soon as possible. Teachers are currently working very hard in the process of organizing online learning platforms and methods of communication.
We acknowledge that while COVID-19 is affecting all SD46 students, grade 12s are in an especially unique situation. As everyone should be social distancing, all graduation events have been postponed for the foreseeable future. Staff and students are exploring alternate possibilities for graduation celebrations. We have yet to figure out what will happen in June, but in light of all this uncertainty, let’s stay positive, patient, and hopeful.
Ministry of Education Announcements:
- Every student will receive a final mark, and all students who are on track to move to the next grade will do so in the fall.
- For grades 10 and 11 students, graduation assessments that were scheduled for April will be postponed.
- Every student eligible to graduate from Grade 12 will graduate.
Student Questions (FAQs)
Will school go into the summer?
It is very unlikely and there are no plans for this.
What will happen to our marks?
Students in Grades 8 and 9 will not get a report card mark in Term 3 but will get a final mark in June. This mark will be a summative assessment of the work completed from September to June which includes from now until June. This time counts! Students in Grades 10-12 will receive a mark and a work habit.
How will this year’s marks be weighed in consideration for post-secondary applications?
Check university websites for how they will address COVID-19. However, it is universally understood that they will look up until your term 3 marks. It is important to check individual university websites as their policies may differ.
When will we get report cards?
By April 22nd, all marks will be posted into Myed by our teachers and most will be posted by April 25th
How do I get my stuff from school?
Principals are currently working on scheduling students to pick up their things. This will look different for each school so please be aware of emails from your principals.
Will video classes be on zoom? If so how will it be done?
Not all classes will be on Zoom. Each class’ teaching depends on individual teachers. If your teacher is planning on using Zoom, they will contact you with a date, time, and meeting ID. You do not need the Zoom app, however, it might be easier to have.
We hope you and your families stay safe and healthy. Please stay home and wash your hands!
Sincerely,
The District Student Leadership
