Delayed Start & Feedback

Dear SD46 Families,

Today’s decision to have a delayed start due to inclement weather was a new one for SD46.  Thank you for being patient and flexible. I often wish for a crystal ball in such situations, but we do the best with the information we have.

Before 6 am, consultations up and down the coast began, including with the bus company. Due to the variable nature of the weather and the unique geographical features, there was no clear-cut answer and information was changing rapidly which delayed our decision and communication.  We wanted to make informed decisions which supported the safety of all.

A delayed start allowed for increased daylight, plows to start clearing, staff and families to consider their options for travel and an opportunity to continue to monitor the weather patterns.  We had initially hoped the delay would mean all buses could run, but this was not the case.

The safety of students and staff is our first priority. Specifically, student safety is a shared responsibility. Parents/caregivers are responsible for their child’s safe travel to school. If for any reason a parent/caregiver feels that a child cannot travel safely to school, they should make other arrangements for their child. Students will not be penalized for absences due to severe weather conditions.

We had many students throughout the district attend school today and benefit from a wonderful day of joy and learning.

We welcome feedback on the delayed start. Please visit the following link to complete a feedback form: https://sd46.bc.ca/district-information/delayed-start-feedback-form/

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

With appreciation,

Kate
