Superintendent’s Report to the Board – March 2020
Circle of Care: Students
The Ministry of Education has demonstrated their support for early learning through the Early Learning Framework and linking the possibility of before and after school care to school districts in the future. As a part of this initiative, the students will be provided with a Provincial Education Number that will follow them throughout their educational pathway. (1b)

a. Face painting, dress up, petting zoo, community groups and more.

1. The Indigenous Advisory Circle met in December. The Circle considered program and work and provided input into the upcoming Environmental Action Plan with an indigenous lens. (1h, 1i)

1. Over two hundred students enthusiastically travelled to We Day in Vancouver. The annual celebration of young people making local communities and the world a better place to live is boisterous, exciting and motivating! (1a)

a. The DSLT Grade 11 Student Forum engaged students in discussions regarding Environmental Issues and Climate Change, Vaping and Substance Use, and Mental Health. (1a)

a. The Kindergarten Survey of Learning takes place each September. Skills including literacy, numeracy, fine motor development, speech and language development are all assessed and then communicated with kindergarten teachers. Parents are notified by VCH of any dental, vision, or hearing concerns that are identified. (1b)

a. The Coastal Voices celebration on Thursday, June 6th highlighted the superb authors we have amongst our students. Students, teachers and parents were impressed and moved by the quality of writing. Many thanks to the Festival of the Written Arts for their support. (1b)
