Volunteer Driver Form

In volunteering to transport students, I confirm my responsibility to follow the expectations of School District No. 46 (Sunshine Coast):

1. Vehicles used for student transportation must be insured with minimum Third-Party Liability of $1,000,000. Please check with your local Auto plan agent to confirm that your coverage levels and “Rate Class” are appropriate for the type of driving you will be doing.

2. The vehicle must be properly equipped with seatbelts for each occupant: seat belts must be secured when travelling. Booster seats must be used when applicable in accordance with the Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Please refer to ICBC’s website (https://www.icbc.com/brochures/Pages/child-car-seats.aspx) for further guidelines to be followed regarding child passenger safety.

3. The School District does not accept responsibility for any damage to the vehicle in the event of an accident, nor for deductible, loss of insurance discount or loss of use.

4. The volunteer driver and owner should ensure that, to the best of their knowledge, the motor vehicle used for student transportation, is in good mechanical condition and meets highway safety requirements.

5. Vehicles used will only be driven by the volunteer driver noted above who must be at least 21 years of age and in good health. The driver must be accident free for at least three years and cannot be a secondary school student. The driver must provide a copy of their current driver’s license, vehicle insurance and driving record to the school. The volunteer driver forms are considered valid for a period up to five years at this school location from the date of signing. If you are issued a new license, insurance policy, or something has changed on your record, please update your documents with the school office.

6. The vehicle must be equipped with winter, all season tires and/or chains for winter conditions.

7. For safety and health reasons, smoking in vehicles transporting students is not permitted, this includes e-cigarettes and vapour products.

8. The use of cell phones and other hand-held electronic devices including handsfree/bluetooth are not permitted while transporting students.

9. The driver must not, at any time during their performance as a volunteer driver, consume any alcohol or other substances or medications which impact their ability to drive.

10. The driver must not operate the vehicle in an unsafe manner or in contravention of any statute or regulation governing the operation of motor vehicles.

11. Children under the age of thirteen should not be transported in the front passenger seat of a vehicle equipped with an air bag.

12. If the vehicle has the capacity to carry more than nine occupants, the driver must have a Class 4 license.

13. Drivers of school district owned vehicles must review and adhere to the stipulations of the Fleet Safety and Maintenance Plan (https://sd46.bc.ca/wp-content/uploads/regulations/regulations-4000/4140-SD46_Fleet_Safety_and_Maintenance_Plan.pdf) and complete the additional forms and requirements provided by the Maintenance Department.
