The last Board meeting of the school year signals a shift to year end celebrations and rituals. And at the heart of both celebration and ritual is our value of belonging. Belonging is what transforms a school from a place of learning into a community of connection. As we gather for end of year concerts, school leaving ceremonies, graduations and retirements in June, we create spaces where everyone—students, staff, and families—can see themselves, feel valued, and be included. These celebrations aren’t just events; they are affirmations of identity.
June is also home to Pride Month and Indigenous History Month. We are proud to mark these events in our schools, and many of you may already see the rainbow Pride flag flying or taken part in the various community and school-based celebrations. These moments remind us how critical it is to celebrate and affirm the diverse identities within our community—another powerful expression of belonging.
As the Board pauses for summer, we have a lot to celebrate too:
- The launch and implementation of the new strategic plan
- Continued support for DPAC/PAC professional development with compassionate systems leadership and meeting skills
- The creation of the Parent Engagement Ad Hoc
- Advocacy for student safety, active travel and student transportation
- Significant update and revisions to key policies and bylaws
- Collaboration with provincial partners for successful advocacy for increased funding for Feeding Futures (food for students)
- Reviewed and reaffirmed the SD46–SCRD Joint Use Agreement to maximize opportunities to increase the use of public assets and resources for community and students
- Presentation for BCSTA: Listening to Lead- The Power of Student Trustees
- Presentation to the Select Standing Committee on Finance
- A motion based on the recommendation of our student trustee and DSLT
We wish all our graduates and retirees in the Class of 2025 all the best in their transition to new things. We are so proud of you, and you are most welcome to come back; our relationship isn’t over. Who knows what it may be in the future: Volunteer? Employee? Parent? Trustee?
Happy Summer Sunshine Coast School District!
