In October board chairs met in Vancouver where a key focus of our work was discussing the importance of strategic planning in supporting student achievement. The Framework for Enhancing Student Learning (FESL) is intended to formalize the strategic planning that boards do to support equity in student achievement by requiring that all boards to have strategic plans and report outcomes annually. This meeting prompted a reflection on the importance and benefit of a mission statement as part of the process.

October is our month to focus on vision. A vision statement is intended to anchor our desired future state and create purpose in our daily work. It describes what is in front of us and up close as well as what is on the horizon and out of focus. A vision statement is also intended to inspire and move staff, students and key stakeholders towards a place where what is currently on the horizon comes in to focus

1. a) Mentoring Club for Girls at Elphinstone Secondary: Tea Time is a new club created this year by senior students to build a safe place for the junior students to ask questions, meet new people, play games, and drink tea, of course. (1a, 1b)
