Active Travel Days October 6-17 2025

Go Active Travel, the district’s two-week campaign encouraging students and staff to choose Active Travel options starts Monday, October 6th and runs through Friday October 17th.

“Family survey feedback in June was overwhelmingly positive.  Families said their children loved time with friends outside and school prizes offered by PACs,” says Superintendent Kate Kerr.

For parents with work demands and long commutes we encourage families to try the Drive-to-5 option. Leave home 15 minutes early, drive to within a 5-minute walk of school, park safely and enjoy a walk together to school.  Eight of our elementary schools have Best Routes to School information showing recommended routes and helpful tips including suggested Drive-to-5 spots.  These can be downloaded here: https://sd46.bc.ca/families-and-students/active-travel/

Be on the lookout for Road Safety Blitzes at Langdale, Kinnikinnick, and Gibsons Elementary this fall to remind everyone in the community to slow down.  Bike Skills and Safety courses are also being offered to Grade 4 and 5 classes at West Sechelt, Gibsons, and Cedar Grove Elementary this October.

“All drivers, please go slow.  Remember the 30 km/h speed limit near schools.  And give school buses and everyone at crosswalks and bike lanes lots of room.  We need to keep our youngest community members safe as they navigate their way to and from school,” says Superintendent Kerr.  “Join us for Active Travel!”
