Submitted by Vice-Chair Leech: April was a busy month for SD46 trustees with our regular meetings, the District Student Leadership Team forum and the BC School Trustees Association AGM. Trustees are also attending the SCTA and the CUPE collective agreement bargaining meetings. Chair Ruth was also in attendance at the Industry Training Authority Gala on April 9th to acknowledge the work of increasing the numbers of students in these training programs.

We are all stakeholders here on the Sunshine Coast, and regardless of our differences and demographics, the outcomes of our youth affect everyone. Mutual respect is a must.

It’s been a month chock-full of activity for the Board. On top of that, due to February already being a short month and Spring Break coming up, we have needed to compress all our meetings and activities into the first two weeks of March.

Trustees were pleased to take part in School Tours last month over a three-day period. Generally, one half hour was spent touring each school, as well as the maintenance building and Sechelt Learning Centre.

While the time between this and the previous board report was short, due to the winter break, it was by no means void of activity. Winter performances and activities were held throughout the district. Unfortunately, with some of the storms, a few concerts were cancelled. Student safety is always our number one priority, and if that means not riding on those roads with parents trying to get to the school, then that’s what that means.

As we near the end of June, we’d like to reflect back on a few of the things that happened over this school year. We have some incredible programs and initiatives in this district, all focused on engaging our students, staff and community in lifelong learning.

May 2018 bring you joy and success in all of your endeavours. 2017 was a great year, ending in school holiday celebrations and the second annual North versus South Hockey game. The North and South Hockey game is an initiative of our District Student Leadership Team, as part of their ongoing efforts to promote increased student connectedness between high schools.
