Families are encouraged to complete the online registration process via MyEd. <strong>(1b)<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Literacy Week: <\/strong>Thanks to our partnership with the Writers Festival &amp; their \u2018Celebration of Books, Authors &amp; Community\u2019, we were treated to a host of world-class Canadian authors who zoomed into classrooms across the Sunshine Coast to celebrate Family Literacy Week. Authors surfaced important messages about Indigenous culture, our environment, social media and diversity. Their stories were inspiring. In addition, schools created a week of unique opportunities to celebrate literacy from theme days to whole school activities. (1d)<\/li><li><strong>Parenting Teens: Empowering Teens and yourself through Positive Discipline Workshop. <\/strong>Family Support Navigators, Sarah Joseph and Sue Lamb were thrilled to provide a full day workshop on Saturday, February 4th, to help empower parents and teens through positive discipline. <strong>(1f)<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>District Wrestling Results: <\/strong>Sunshine Coast wrestlers performed phenomenally at the North Shore Championships and Western Canada Championships! We are proud of their hard work and dedication in achieving such impressive results. A special congratulations to Ethan Sullivan for becoming the Western Canada Champion, and for overcoming the wrestler who had beaten him two weeks prior in the finals! We are also grateful for the fantastic coaching of Peter Brampton at the North Shore Championships. The Committee has been working through a business model to better understand strengths and gaps of existing SD46 food service models to explore values and options for access to stigma-free, equitable, consistent access to food.<strong> (1g)<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Black Excellence Day and Black History Month: <\/strong>On January 13<sup>th<\/sup>, Burnaby Schools and the Ninandotoo Anti-Racism Society organized the second annual Black Excellence Day. Our district and over 12,000 youth and staff from across BC participated in this inspiring virtual event celebrating the diversity of Black achievements, stories, people, and joy. Moreover, February is Black History Month, honouring the legacy of Black Canadians: their contributions and their communities. The theme for Black History Month 2023 is \u201cBlack Resistance\u201d, celebrating how Black people have resisted oppression, discrimination, and prejudice. We continue the work at SD46 of creating an equitable, diverse, and inclusive environment for all. Events like these are important and powerful ways to bring awareness, learn and grow together, and advocate for change. The series will explore compassionate systems leadership, an integrated framework for building personal wellness, strengthening relationships, and using tools from systems thinking in our work as educational leaders. The plan will raise awareness and create resources to improve the school experience for racialized students, staff, and families so that everyone feels a strong sense of belonging. The Ministry of Education and Child Care will provide new training opportunities for all school staff to help foster anti-racist school environments. (<strong>3a) <\/strong><\/li><li><strong>School\u2019s Out Initiative: <\/strong>The School\u2019s Out initiative, offered in partnership with Community Schools and BC United Way, supports the needs of grade 7 students as they transition from elementary school to high school through well-supported sports, arts, social-emotional learning, and cultural after-school programming. With programming based in secondary schools, children become familiar with their high school settings, structure, and staff. (<strong>3c) <\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Recycling Program Take Off at Chatelech Secondary! <\/strong>Uli Hadeler and Dave Teichrob, an EA and teacher respectively, spearheaded a recycling program at Chatelech Secondary which now boasts clearly marked recycling bins and a sustainability education program. What has made it so special is the dedication and commitment to making a lasting change, led by these two passionate staff members who delivered compost and recycling on their own time to local recycling centres. Dave and Uli&#8217;s work led to the creation of a Sustainability 8 and 9 class, an Environmental Science 12 class, and complemented the work of the LifeSkills Shine On recycling program. The aim of these efforts is to educate students and the community to reduce our collective carbon footprint, both at the school and global levels. The district took note of the innovative efforts of the Chatelech team and is now moving in the direction of district-wide compost and recycling stations.
