In the month of June, we celebrate National Indigenous History Month<\/strong> to honour the history, heritage and diversity of Indigenous Peoples in Canada.<\/p>

On Sunday, June 21st, National Indigenous Peoples Day<\/strong>, we celebrate the heritage, diverse cultures and outstanding achievements of First Nations, Inuit and M\u00e9tis!<\/p>

In our places of learning, the Inuit, M\u00e9tis and First Nations Peoples of the Sunshine Coast, their unceded lands, their communities, their languages, and their cultures are acknowledged with gratitude and respect.<\/p>

The cedar basket \u2013 is over a hundred years old \u2013 made by Mary Jackson, master weaver (shishalh)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 We honour traditions and recognize the hardships elders have suffered<\/em><\/p>

Pender Pole \u2013 learning collaboration with Arnold Jones (shishalh)\u00a0\u00a0 We are grateful for the generosity of the knowledge keepers who share their skills with students<\/em><\/p>

Moccasin Beading \u2013 made by an Indigenous Teacher who used to work here (Dene).\u00a0 Beading was self taught based on mentorship from elders\u00a0 Our teachers are always learning<\/em><\/p>

UBC Indigenous Graduation Ceremony (Masters Degree in Indigenous Leadership) \u00a0\u2013 local person who grew up and went to school here, now teaching in the Indigenous Programs.<\/em><\/p>

Our young people with Indigenous ancestry have the potential to grow and strengthen and succeed \u2013 even return to inform and carry on the circle of learning in our district.<\/em><\/p>

Squamish Nation welcome pole \u2013 at the head of Howe Sound \u2013 beginning of the territory that includes SD46 boundaries\u00a0\u00a0 The Skwxwu7mesh People are always on our minds and we do all we can to acknowledge, learn, and honour them<\/em><\/p>

Andy Johnson and Raquel Joe \u2013 shishalh knowledge keepers who contribute so much to the learning in our district \u2013 they serve as \u201cbridges\u201d to the culture for students.<\/em><\/p>
