Superintendent’s Report to the Board – May 12, 2015

1.    Academic Programming

a.     Curriculum Update: a fine new Sunshine Coast-developed poster is posted in all schools to support the Core Competencies of the new B.C. Curriculum. Schools district-wide are developing an awareness of the  competencies. Principals and teachers are focused on these competencies to begin the evolution to the new curriculum in a process designed to take three years.

b.    Careers: the district anticipates continuing all three trades (Culinary, Carpentry, Automotive) next year. Student interest appears to be maintained.

c.     The Early Years Fair at the Early Learning Centre in Sechelt had a very large attendance of families. Parents made many connections with district early learning staff and community agencies while their children had a wonderful time riding ponies, having fun in the petting zoo, enjoying the Early Years Centre activities and the Bookmobile.

2.    Operational

a.     Gibsons Elementary School Grand Opening – May 19th at 1:00 p.m. We are very pleased to be celebrating this exciting milestone in the history of the district.

b.    District Parent Advisory Committee: Thursday, May 28th at 7:00 p.m. in the Chatelech Secondary School library. Constitution and bylaws approval and review of the draft strategic plan. All PACs are warmly welcome and invited to send representatives.

c.     Class sizes district-wide are below provincial averages.

                                               i.     K  18.8 (19.5 - provincial)

                                              ii.     1 to 3:  20.4 (21.5 - provincial)

                                            iii.     4 to 7: 21.9 (25.6 - provincial)

                                            iv.     8 to 12: 22.3 (23.2 - provincial)
