November 12, 2015: Letter to Parents - amended calendar

November 12, 2015: Letter to Parents

Dear Parents/Guardians:

School districts across the province are involved in calendar amendments related to the new Ministry of Education Curriculum Implementation Plan that has recently been announced. The Ministry has reduced instructional hours for 2015/16 by 10 hours, equivalent to two regular school days.

On Tuesday, November 10, 2015, the Board of Education approved a motion to have Monday, January 4, 2016 (the day after winter break) and Tuesday, March 29, 2016 (the day after the two-week Spring Break and Easter Monday) as non-instructional days. The addition of these two non-instructional days will support our district’s teachers as they learn the new curriculum.

The Board of Education appreciates the input of the Sunshine Coast Teachers’ Association and school principals in determining these dates as being smoother for parents since the days are joined to current holidays. For clarity, students will not attend school on January 4 and March 29, 2016. Please view the amended 2015/2016 school calendar on the next page. Please click here to view the amended calendar.

British Columbia’s curriculum is being redesigned to respond to the demanding world our students are entering.  Transformation in curriculum will help teachers create learning environments that are both engaging and personalized for students. The redesigned curriculum focuses on core competencies, essential learning and literacy and numeracy foundations. For more information, please see curriculum.gov.bc.ca

Teachers will begin implementing the redesigned K-9 curriculum in September 2016. We are looking forward to the exciting times ahead in our classrooms as we help our students succeed in this changing world.

Sincerely,

Patrick Bocking, Superintendent of Schools
