Writer in residence visits Gibsons!

Writer Maggie de Vries spent the week of April 11-15, 2011 as writer-in-residence with the Grade 6-7 class at Gibsons Elementary. de Vries worked with the students one hour a day over the course of the week  to develop their writing skills. The students worked on many aspects of writing and storytelling including point of view, character, emotion, metaphor and description. “I feel proud when I read what I wrote,” said one student at the end of the week.

Bev Craig, literacy resource teacher for School District No. 46 said, “The opportunity to have a writer like Maggie in our classrooms has been such a privilege. Maggie's insights and strategies are already being shared among teachers. Her work will have a rippling effect and benefit many students in the district.”

During the week, de Vries also visited the Grade 6-7 students at Halfmoon Bay Elementary School and students at the Sunshine Coast Alternative School (Sechelt). de Vries is the author of fiction and non-fiction  for children and adults, an editor and teacher. Her visit to the Sunshine Coast was part of the Vancouver International Writers Festival’s Writer-in-Residence program, sponsored by Amazon.ca and supported by the Michael R. Shaw Outreach Program.
