Message from the Chair – January 2017

Best wishes to all in our SD46 community for a wonderful new year of learning!

As has been our tradition for several years, trustees are taking time this month to visit all schools in the district.  On January 12th, we visited the schools at the south end of the coast. Many thanks to the ACE-IT Culinary Arts Program for making sure we started our day at Elphinstone Secondary School with delicious food! We will be visiting schools in the Pender and Sechelt area on January 17th and touring Sunshine Coast Alternate School sites and the Maintenance yard on January 19th.  This is the first year we are touring maintenance and also the first year we have invited local municipal politicians to join us in touring the schools in their area. Thanks to all principals, teaching staff and educational assistants for interrupting your day to help us understand the critical work you do in the classroom.  It is one of the best times of the year for trustees and is of tremendous help for us in our work at the board table.

On another topic we are thrilled to see is increasing level of parent engagement in our district.  The Positive Discipline course is offered again starting later this month.  All of the offerings of this course have been full for the past year and our principals, teachers, EAs and counselors have taken part with many staff from community organizations. This project is helping students get caring consistent messages from all they encounter throughout the community.  As always, the many partners working to help youth on the coast improves our ability to give the best we can.  Thank you all for your work.
